Turning renewable volatility into resilient returns
Wind and solar reached a record 27% of EU electricity in 2023 and are targeted to reach 55% by 2030; because they generate at the same time, they increasingly depress prices when they produce, and across Europe there were, in aggregate, more than 9,000 hours of negative power prices in 2025. Renewable capture prices are eroding. At the same time, as synchronous thermal generation, such as coal- and gas-fired power plants, retires and variable renewables expand, the system needs new sources of fast-response flexibility, frequency support and other grid services – the gap BESS fills.
Battery energy storage systems (BESS) earn from the other side of that equation – volatility, scarcity and flexibility rather than generation volume.
